The police have arrested a suspect in Sunday’s early-morning attempted rape, Lieutenant Patrick Ferguson of the Ninth Precinct announced tonight.
Mr. Ferguson said that he had just heard about the arrest shortly before addressing around 25 attendees at a Ninth Precinct Community Council meeting and had no further information. A police spokesman had not yet received any information regarding the arrest of the suspect, either. [See update below.]
Shortly after a man attacked the victim in the stairwell of her First Avenue apartment at around 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, police released surveillance footage of a suspect. The man, said to be in his 20s, roughly 5-foot-9 and 170 pounds, is suspected of pushing the victim to the ground, lifting up her skirt, and then fleeing after she resisted.
Mr. Ferguson also mentioned the arrest late last month of a suspect in the murder of 17-year-old Donovan “Keith” Salgado. That collar was met with applause by locals at the meeting.
Update | 11:45 p.m. A police representative has now confirmed the arrest of 35-year-old Imre Meszesan of Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. He has been charged with burglary and attempted rape.
