A market and deli is coming to the space where vegetarian standby Kate’s Joint closed in April.

Marcelino Castillo, a manager at Gracefully, told The Local that his store at 58 Avenue B will be called Vella Market and will sell organic fruits, vegetables, and juices, as well as a full deli menu with sandwiches. It should open by October.

“It’s going to be all-natural,” Mr. Castillo said, indicating that Vella will be similar to the Gracefully store on Avenue A, between Second and Third Streets, and its sister location adjacent Stuyvesant Town.

Contractors have been doing demolition work on the Avenue B space this week; subcontractor Sonny Jung said they should be finished installing new walls and a new floor in about five weeks. Documents filed with the Department of Buildings estimate the total cost of that work at over $58,000.

Mr. Castillo said he wasn’t concerned about competing against East Village Finest Deli and East Side Gourmet Deli, already at the intersection of Fourth Street and Avenue B. “I’m going to bring different stuff than what they have,” he said. “Sure, the sandwiches could be the same, but this is a bigger place, and I’m going to have fresh fruit, vegetables, and fresh produce which these guys don’t have.”
